Dr. ElSherif led the efforts of introducing the Internet to Egypt and the Arab World. Under his leadership, the first internet backbone for Egypt has been built, as well as, and the Internet Society. He also led the initiation of RITSEC's Arab Regional Initiative, through which it effectively introduced the Internet to several Arab countries by providing services and support to the Regional Arab Information Technology Network's (RAITNET) 24 agencies, which represent a total of 22 Arab countries. Throughout the different stages of introducing the Internet to these countries, and under his leadership, RITSEC provided continuous consultation and technical assistance, training courses, workshops and seminars based on its own first hand experience that it had previously gained in Egypt. RITSEC's Arab Regional Initiative also encompassed the vision of helping Arab countries build their national information societies, in terms of networks, technology and infrastructure.
