Dr. ElSherif led RITSEC to be recognized as one of the leading authorities in the region on the use of information technology in sustainable development and environmental protection. The Environmental Information Technology Solutions (EITS) Program provided the tools, techniques and services needed to assist in sustainable development projects; promoted the use of information technology in environmental studies; and provided assistance in management and implementation of environmental programs and projects. EITS developed geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies for environmental projects, provided consulting and training to raise awareness of the need for environmental protection. The EITS project was also focusing on using the Internet in environmental programs and developing applications for organizations, tailored specifically to their needs. EITS has worked with many national and international organizations to raise awareness and promote the use of information technology in environmental protection. He also supported the efforts of establishing Egypt's first environmental plan and the first initiative for nation wide environmental indicators.
