Dr. ElSherif established the Knowledge Society Center (KSC) in 2007. KSC's mandate included the design and testing of new methodologies and tools for finding knowledge, expressing and communicating knowledge, and ultimately using knowledge to enhance the capacity of the social and human capital in the region thereby empowering Arab societies. For the realization of its goal, KSC depended on its implementation mechanism, which was: "Diwan El Marefa". Diwan El Marefa was an initiative spearheaded by KSC, and supported by a group of distinguished intellectuals, artists, and civil society representatives from Egypt and the Arab region. Diwan El Marefa was an inclusive forum that was meant to bring together people who share a common belief in the power of informed dialogue in furthering knowledge, and accordingly the prosperity and well-being of mankind. A core principle of Diwan El Marefa was that differences in ideology, creed and gender should be accorded due respect, and considered to enrich to the process of knowledge building.
